Robert Moses was a city planner in New York City for much of the 20th century and has been credited as the architect of modern-day suburbia. How did he do it? With expressways. Moses discovered that he could access more seed money than ever before for the production of high-speed roads across the city if he simply called the lands through which he wants to build them “parks”. The parkways and expressways that criss-cross Manhattan today, enabling New Yorkers to get into the city quickly to work and exit to lives apart from its streets, are a direct result of his efforts.
