In 1987 three composers, Michael Gordan, David Lang and Julia Wolfe (above) formed an organization called Bang on a Can, "dedicated to commissioning, performing, creating, presenting and recording contemporary music (
bangonacan.org)." It began as a one-day festival in New York and grew into a number of projects and an annual marathon to celebrate and advance American music.
